What brings Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Jerry Garcia together? They all shared an honesty of expression, a desire to communicate their ideas and share in that communication with the audience. They have in common a history of sensitivity to stress and tragedy reaching back to childhood. Most importantly, they shared a great desire to experience different possibilities – in society, in music and creative expression; in human interaction and in the human experience itself.
In the 60s, music was a unifying experience, of which drug use was a part. Unfortunately at these times, people did not understand the gravity and the health risks that could be associated with the usage of drugs. Sadly, many musicians were the poster children for the effects of excessive uses of these drugs. However, society has learned from what they stood for, and also what to avoid by their example.
